During one of his last trips to Las Vegas in December 2004, Andreas Schmidt teamed up with Christoph Ribbat, who had been commissioned to write the accompanying essay for the book and together they visited the Neon Boneyard in North Las Vegas. Now published for the first time in this limited edition artist's book you can see Schmidt's photographs on the subject alongside the photographs in Judy Natal's book NEON BONEYARD LAS VEGAS A-Z, published by The Center for American Places in 2006. Schmidt started off by making a unique artist's book by simply gluing his mini-prints into Natal's book opposite her photographs. He then proceeded to scan the book on a flat-bed scanner, in order to release a strictly limited edition of 100 copies made through Blurb.
Although traditionalists might be shocked to see a photobook by another photographer being invaded and treated in that way, the end result poses many questions intrinsic to contemporary thinking about photography.
Is it a new book? Is it a pirate copy? Is it a combination of two bodies of work or is the combination the new work? Is it a facsimile or is it an artist's book? Is it the death of the photographer?
