This catalog is an experimental collaboration between two parties who inhabit the same house, but reside on opposite sides of a shared wall. The house is the University of Illinois at Chicago, the divided room, the College of Architecture and the Arts, and the parties graduate students of art and art history. Proof brings together these brethren wall–sharers and this book offers a glimpse into both rooms: fresh art criticism and critical contemporary art. Thus the twelve essay/ pictures or image/texts bound within this book are a product of a dialogue between works and words, artists and critics, rather than a sum of an accidental collective experience. Two artists each were selected by the six writers based on a review of digital images, after which the pairs participated in studio visits. Many artists offered the writers their own words as appendicies to these conversations. In other words, Proof is not a record of twelve artists’ work, but a work in itself; our experiment binds the artists and critics through an alchemical dialogic process, offering unseen outcomes for both sides, and hopefully the reader as well.
