About the Book
This selection of works covers roughly the period (1985 to the present) of my return to the figuration after several years of somewhat “Johnsian” exploration (fans, flaps, etc.). The book sections constitute groupings based on common themes, subject matter or sensibility. There are obvious cases of overlap; this is inevitable since the paintings come out of a free-associative process with multiple sources and levels of potential meaning and draw on a range of experiences which includes encounters with the body of work itself. I particularly enjoyed discovering the roots of current ideas in older work, and bringing examples of these relationships together in the making of this book.
