About the Book
Longing to Speak is a contemporary window into the old Mississippi River places that were a source of inspiration as well as the setting for several of Eudora Welty's early stories and novels. In their explorations, the authors found small graveyards, loneliness, and isolation--just as Welty described. Even though many of the paces show the wear of time, weather, and vandalism, it is still possible to see in Alan Whiteside's photographs the magic of places not quite forgotten, places that long to tell their stories. Descriptions of each location, written by Mary Whiteside, provide insight into the history and beauty of "Welty Country."
