About the Book
Nowadays the name of Sicily is synonymous with organised crime and corruption. However, while the influence of crime has undoubtedly adversely affected the island, Sicily nevertheless is rightly proud of its rich variety of culture, cuisine, and architecture.
This variety is due in no small measure to its geographical location. Situated in the central Mediterranean between Africa and Europe it has been fought over and suffered invasion by a succession of cultures and civilisations over the past three millennia. Each has left its influence on Sicily.
This book contains photographs that were taken during a visit to the island between August 1-19, 2002. Hopefully, the pictures and the accompanying captions and text convey the rich and varied history and cultural influences on this the largest island in the Mediterranean.
