About the Book
2011 was already a difficult year for me, but the floods took a heavy toll; our home is in one of the worst hit areas outside Bangkok. Annette Urbach took the initiative to reach out to people she or I, or both of us knew and offer images in return for help. The responses were a big help in enabling me to overcome the worst. The photographs made available were in a Facebook album entitled The Choice Is Yours.
At the same time I was in Isan, near the Emerald Triangle, as the house outside Bangkok was under 1.3 meters of water for two months. During this period in the countryside, staying with the Raksa family, who have taken me in over the years as one of their own, in a nearby village, while traveling with fellow-photographer/friend Mark Carey I met a young, twelve year old girl named Gai. Part of her story, is mentioned along with her photograph in the book.
The effort to help Gai is part of what this book is about.
When I returned to Bangkok, another friend of many years, Thomas "Hallon" Hallbert had come up with the idea, and taken the initiative to start putting together a book of my photographs. His motivation was as a friend and also his conviction a book is justified.
After going over the idea, looking into what had already been done by Hallon and mutually agreeing on the importance of including Gai we realized the book had its origin and raison d’être in more than a collection of images.
Entitling the Book The Choice Is Yours has, of course many meanings , and the choice of how to interpret those meanings….is yours.
