Disegnato nel 1869 dall'architetto fiorentino Giuseppe Poggi, Piazzale Michelangelo offre una bellissima vista panoramica su Firenze e sull'Arno, ed è sicuramente una fermata obbligatoria per turisti e fiorentini.
Creata come parte dei grandi lavori di ristrutturazione della mura cittadine nel 1869, questa suntuosa terrazza del Poggi è tipicamente ottocentesca.
Il Poggi realizzò il piazzale come monumento per la celebrazione di Michelangelo e delle sue opere, che dovevano essere qui esposte, sia il Daivid che le sculture dei Medici in San Lorenzo.
Quando la terrazza fu finita, il Poggi realizzò anche la loggia in stile neoclassico che doveva ospitare un museo delle opere di Michelangelo. L'edificio non è mai diventato un museo, ed oggi è un famoso ristorante panoramico.
Oggi la piazza è affollata da turisti, bancherelle e una grande riproduzioni in bronzo del David di Michelangelo.
Parte del Piazzale è un parcheggio, dove uno viene per godersi il bel panorama. Si può anche raggiungere a piedi, seguendo le grandi scalinate che partono da Piazza Poggi, proprio sotto Piazzale Michelangelo.

Created as part of major restructuring of the city walls in 1869, Poggi's sumptuous terrace is typically 19th century. Poggi designed a monument base dedicated to Michelangelo, where copies of Michelangelo's works, including the David and Medici chapel sculptures from San Lorenzo would be displayed. When the terrace was finished, Poggi designed the hillside building with loggia as a museum for Michelangelo's works. For some reason, Poggi's project was not realized as it was intended. The building that was to be a museum is now a restaurant.
Today, the piazza is filled with tourists, vendors, and a bronze replica of Michelangelo's David. Just remember that most of Piazzale Michelangelo is a parking lot, and one comes here to enjoy the view. It
