About the Book
Ekasi is the most commonly used word for township or “hood” in the Xhosa language. With this book we want to reveal the lifestyles of those people staying in the Cape Town townships. A lot of what people think they know about township life is frightening or sad. It’s true that violence and crime are problems on the Cape Flats, but that’s not the whole story.

Hi, my name is Jody van der Kwaak. I am a graphic designer and photographer. I live in the Netherlands, but I was born in South Africa and I still feel rooted there. I always felt a strong connection to this beautiful country and its great diversity. Yes, it has problems, but why not focus on the positive? With my book, Ekasi, I want to give an insight in the life of the townships, a story told by young adults who share their view on their world through photography and poems. Photos and poems that inspire. I believe we can learn from other cultures, simply by showing interest. Not by blindly believing the negative things we hear and read, but by looking through the eyes of the inhabitants and by reading words that will touch your heart. This book is not just a book. It's a story that must be told. Jody
