About the Book
LOOK UP - TWIST - LOOK DOWN - LOOK DOWN
DAVID WILLIS
This new series of paintings look to rearrange the accepted ranking of marks within the pictorial hierarchy. Disregarding precious composition - the lowest form of mark is given primacy.
The lowest form of mark is that which is used to unmake an image, namely the 'scribble'; used solely to delete, erase and wipe out all other visuals.
Through standardisation Willis has remade the scribble into a motif, the repetition of which has created his own visual language with its unique pictorial hierarchy.
Willis' approach to painting is unreserved without precepts; spontaneously altering the work according to the dialogue initiated with each piece.
This body of work culminated in a solo exhibition that opened 02/03/12 at The Palatine Gallery in Stoke Newington, East London. The show was dominated by a large floor installation made from insulation tape, self-adhesive vinyl and underground station posters. It was made in-situ in response to the space and other exhibited work.
