About the Book
This study takes into consideration primary and secondary research and has acquired material from various sources, alongside information from the 59 Rodney Street, National Trust House and the Liverpool and Merseyside Record Office photographic archive. The research defines and locates the photographs of Liverpool, its people, buildings and landscapes taken by Edward Fitzmaurice Chambre Hardman (1898-1988). It looks into how many of Hardman’s photographs have been documented, in book form and digitally and how some of the images have changed over time - questioning whether they relate to the current reality. Hardman’s photos have encapsulated a memory of what Liverpool used to be and his images were sometimes staged, or artistically formed. This study looks at how Hardman achieved some of his final images, and his developing techniques and styles. It also describes Hardman’s work, specifically locating it within its context of twentieth century architectural building representation with relation to the Bedford Lemere & Co ‘An Age of Confidence’ exhibition. It also compares and contrasts it against modern day photography and architectural building representation; to see how Liverpool has evolved, or even remained the same over the years.
