About the Book
In the Orchard.
A walk in the orchard during autumn harvest.
Large format landscape book: 13" x 11".
Hardbound in black linen with full color dust jacket.
24 pages; 23 images.
This book is for those who love apples and autumn . . . and photograpy. When the sun's arc lies closer to the horizon and frost collects like diamonds on the grass at night, then one feels the urge to gather in the good things of life. The apple harvest is a signal of the turn of seasons. Winter will be long and dark.
It's in autumn that a bite into a tree-fresh apple . . . springing with juice and the smell of its earthy presence . . . it's then that an apple can taste the sweetest.
"After listening to my wife Heather's cherished stories of going to the orchard every fall when she was a child, I knew that I must relive the experience with her. In rolling foothills of upstate New York, apple orchards cover thousands of acres. Countless heritage apple trees (mixed with new hybrid trees) grow on the hillsides. Orchardmen harvested fruit while the weather held; we picked apples directly from the trees, and paid by the bag as we left. I loved it. My favorites are the antique trees, a legacy from even before the time Heather was there as a little girl with her big brothers. Here, life is governed by the seasons and fall is glorious . . . in the orchard."
The book's images are stylized, full color views of the elements of life in the orchard. Legacy trees hint of fairies and trolls, with arms gnarled and stretched, offering the year's fruit to the taker. If you ever walked into an orchard in autumn, this will evoke memories for you. In this book, the images are accompanied with what I call casual haiku - haiku that orally parallels the visual impressions. The author skipped haiku class, but satisfied himself with these samples.
