About the Book
The people of Hampi village, Karnataka state, India, have been forced to leave their homes. The government have decided to re-develop the Hampi heritage site. The homes in Hampi shall be demolished in the process. Most of these people and previous generations have lived here all of their lives, making the temples and other buildings their homes. There is a great sense of anger and injustice among the people as they have helped Hampi become what it is today. They provide friendly hospitality and services in an eco friendly environment. Tourism is the primary source of income. Many families are fully dependent on its revenue to survive. It is this community spirit within Hampi that has given this heritage site its real living charm.
The following is a series of diptychs comprising of portraits and interior details of a selection of homes along the main Hampi Bazaar. I was warmly welcomed as these people invited me to share their experiences and personal spaces. I extend sincere gratitude to them all and I deeply hope that these people don’t become a forgotten community in the re-development of Hampi.
