About the Book
In her work “Segments of substantiality” , M. Kardinal approaches space, projection, and remembrance. The work consists of three segments: a series of Polaroids; a sequence of photographic self-portraits; and segments of moving images. http://www.segmentederwirklichkeit.de/
At the core of the work is the old house that the artist has been residing and living in for the past decade.
The old house has been witness to many fundamental social revolutions. While the appearance of the town – and especially the street the house is located at – has been changed in accordance with the zeitgeist, this house has changed only insignificantly for the past 108 years. Only the ravages of time have left their marks: the house has grown older; it looks like it would just fade away some time in the future – just as everybody’s life will end eventually.
By now, the house is almost completely vacated. However, one can still find the traces of all those beings – human and animal alike – that have lived in those rooms, that have enlivened them. The old walls have seen love and passion, happiness and fury, mourning and parting. Every brick in this house reminds one of the transience of life; behind every door, there is a universe of memories. Every noise contributes to the melody of experience – all noises together combine to elegies of parting. A.S.
