Monuments are based on photographs of dead and wounded soldiers taken during the American Civil War. I am re-staging and photographing these images with myself as the subject as a passive-aggressive assault on history. In these photographs, I am addressing the presence and the absence of veterans and war casualties in contemporary American public life. As a veteran, I am using my own body and my biography as the content and the material. Many of the works in this series involve placing myself outside in public areas and posing dead.
“Sculptures from the Diagnostic Systems Manual (DSM)” are a series of photographs and videos about how my own disability is viewed by myself and by the world. I photographed myself posing like the patients in the historic photographs that I found while doing research into psychiatry and photography.
