Marcus is taken away by his mother from his home with Auntie Jean and Uncle Jim in a disused windmill called ‘Windy Ridge’ for a life of drudgery in America.

Desperate to escape and make his way back he meets a strange boy called Doors who has a most unusual talent. Together they have adventures across the world, visiting the Pyramids of Egypt and spending some time aboard a container ship crossing the wide ocean. As Marcus learns more about his strange companion he realises that Doors is carrying a secret and heavy burden.

All ends well when Marcus offers Doors a new home back at ‘Windy Ridge’.
