Something very different from this Author. A photographic diary of an epic 5,200 km rail based journey across India in Winter, 1980. A thick book, fully 220 pages, with over 300 photographs.
As far as can be ascertained there is no other available all colour photographic album focussing on India's steam locomotives anywhere.
Can you imagine a country with 7000 steam locomotives in capital stock on four different gauges ? (2' 0", 2' 6", 1 metre, 5' 6" broad gauge) in capital stock ? Where steam was to be seen almost everywhere one looked and you could stand on the lineside and not have a clue what type (or even gauge) of steam loco would come along next ? (India had many 'double' and even some 'triple' gauge stations) Well , imagine no longer, because it's all in "STEAM ACROSS INDIA".
The book is augmented with lively anecdotal text, schematic diagrams, appropriate technical and operational information, and occasional historic notes. Above all, it is a photographic album of
R E A L steam. No special trains, no run-pasts, no arranged smoke, no tarted up engines. This is a steam railway as it was, the real gritty thing. As you would expect with a country like India, there are poignant images that bring across the people of India and a way of life unfamiliar to most of us.
On this journey across India, about 1400 steam locomotives were encountered, outnumbering the combined totals of diesels and electrics by 3:1. No less than 34 different steam classes (excluding sub-classes). The variety was simply mind boggling. A paradise for lovers of British and American built steam locomotives, as well as indigenous builds. From 0-4-0 tanks up to semi-streamlined Pacifics, massive 200 ton 2-8-2 freight locos, 120 ton suburban tank locos. (Not to mention an 0-3-0 tank locomotive.... yes 0-3-0 !)
This - unlike the Author's acclaimed South African books - is not dominated by lineside based photography. It was a steam railway journey, and coverage of steam sheds abound, plus the amazing activities in Indian stations. However, lineside photography is certainly not forgotten. ( Thirty years ago in India, linesiding in the traditional sense was not an option and any visitor would want to stay away from the bedlam on the roads as much as possible).
Heavy freight trains, local passenger, crack expresses, mountain climbing trains ...... India had it all. Indian railways had nine 'regions' or 'zones'. Steam in black, grey, blue, green, russet, red .. and ranging from clean to the absolute opposite end of the spectrum.
TRULY A DIFFERENT STEAM PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM, BUT PLEASE DON'T DELAY. THIS BOOK WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE FOR A VERY LIMITED PERIOD. Sadly, once it's gone ..... it's gone. The book is written in the form of a photographic diary and the text is written in such a way as to provide a cohesive story. You may not have been to India, but - as a proud owner of this book - you will certainly be familiar with its people, its railways and its steam locomotives. At $72 (+p/p) for the STANDARD landscape size version (see alternative ordering tab in the bookstore) and $135 (+p/p) for this huge large landscape version, it offers remarkable value for a print on demand book, Postage and packing are the same for several books , as for a single book. So please consider other titles in the Author's BLURB catalogue, and / or get together with like minded friends to combine an order.
