About the Book
Described as one of the most beautiful and unique sculpture parks in the United Kingdom, Sculpture by the Lakes has been created by sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wife Monique. It marries the soft beauty of nature’s wild river landscape with the more formal presentation of monumental outdoor sculpture. It is that combination of art and landscape that inspires Sculpture by the Lakes. Whether it is work on a monumental scale that relates to its environment, or smaller works, the sculptures of Simon Gudgeon are perfectly placed in the delicately nurtured natural landscape to visually enhance their surroundings. The effect is a balance, a harmony of form and context where the experience is central. Without walls, without interpretation, each person can engage with the art and the ever-changing environment.
Like all of nature, this is a landscape that is constantly evolving and we are continually experimenting both sculpturally and in our planting and design. Apart from a few more mature trees, we started from scratch only four years ago so many of the trees and shrubs are still very young. We hope you enjoy exploring and although there are paths throughout the park there is no set trail to follow so we encourage you to take your time to search out the hidden gems.

About the Creator
One of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors, Simon Gudgeon has developed a minimalist, semi-abstract style capturing movement and emotion with a visual harmony that is unmistakably his own. His pared-down approach to sculpture embodies the flowing line of the natural form, turning it into something less detailed, more abstract. Gudgeon’s work is featured in important private collections around the world including those of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, plus several art museum collections in the USA. In 2009, Gudgeon’s sculpture Isis was installed in Hyde Park, London, the first such installation there for over 50 years. HRH the Prince of Wales also has an Isis sculpture which was installed at Highgrove House, Gloucestershire in 2011. A new monumental sculpture Search for Enlightenment was installed at Millbank, London in October 2011 next to Tate Britain and also at One Hyde Park, described as London’s most prestigious address.
