About the Book
Drovers are part of Australia's outback heritage.
These experienced horsemen drove cattle and sheep from place to place, often over long distances. Keeping the mob together and quiet was a valuable skill, as well as making sure they arrived in good condition.
The drover's intelligent, loyal cattle dogs were an essential help in this task, full of energy for herding and nipping when needed. These 'blue heelers' as they are also called, were bred from herding dogs from Northumberland crossed with dingoes. The drover also used a stockwhip.
This book by Courier Mail illustrator and artist Peter Stephenson is a celebration of growing up in the country, riding horses and meeting drovers in the Stanthorpe district. It is in his own handwriting, bumpy at times as if written on horseback.
