I fell in love with the book, André Kertész The Polaroids. Kertész shot his Polaroids with an SX-70 camera. Polaroid stopped making film for this camera in 2006 but I had ten or eleven packs, all of it expired. I had been hoarding this film for at least two years, waiting for the right inspiration. I found it in Kertész’s book. I was inspired—inspired to use my very last packs of film to create an homage to Kertész.

As projects do, this one changed somewhat over time. Working with my own precious objects had a profound affect on me. This work became not only an homage to Kertész but also an expression of longing and nostalgia for things past. Many of the objects I photographed were handed down from people no longer alive or were gifts from friends I no longer know. Some of these possessions are so special that I would be heartsick to lose them. I loved working on this project but it felt bittersweet. With every click of the camera I had one less piece of film. So with each shot I felt a deep loss and longing. I will miss working with this very special film.

The first night I spent in the darkroom, printing the first roll of black and white film, was like falling down a rabbit hole. I was in Wonderland. That was over ten years ago. Photography is the tool I use for exploring emotions and feelings. I love making photo based images and often work with a question as a focal point or as a direction to pursue. The images I resonate with are those that are personal expressions but seem to have a universal theme. I invite you to join me on my journey down the ‘hole’.
