Marvin has put together this book and it is designed as a how to guide. Not as a definitive or exhaustive explanation of the processes but a starting block for your own journeys into Pitfired Pottery. It will cover how to fire your pots with wood in a naturalistic exploratory way.
Pitfiring or pit fired pottery is probably the earliest method of firing pottery known to man. Early examples have been dated back to 3200BC and most probably before!
In this book it is hoped you will find ideas and inspiration .
As a mainly self taught potter Marvin Kitshaw favours learning from the material and its processes, using written and visual sources to inform his practice; being experimental as an ‘alchemist’, listening and looking. Marvin trained at Newcastle College of Art and Design as a Three Dimensional Designer, served time as a Pattern Maker, Technical support in an Art Department, Mural Painter, Interior Designer, and Community Arts Lecturer. He is now business owner at Muddy Fingers Pottery where he teaches and produces Specialist Functional Stoneware Cookware, Raku pottery, Ceramic Scuplture and Pitfired ware.
