Ferries are funny things. Riding one is a sophisticated game of piggyback: one minute we are in control of our own direction and destiny, the next we are floating and aimless. Ready to go, but not going.

In this state of suspended animation- between one purposeful activity and the next- what do people do? They hunker down, they nest, they play, they contemplate. They look at the map, they snooze.

The boat tries in its way to be our temporary world: there are rooms with chairs, racks of brochures, food to eat and signs to read.

We have all our things with us, packed into our cars and trucks... we are ready to go, but for this moment everyone has nothing to do but wait.
