Abstract forms in photography are often associated with large-scale nature; fragments of mountains, forests, rocks, sand dunes, seas or by by contrast with the microscopic structure of the hidden world. Because photography is by its nature literal and descriptive, it is overly dependent on its descriptive content to give it meaning.
I am more interested in capturing ambiguous images that transcend this literalness and can be read, visually, in multiple ways. Ambiguity comes from an unexpected play of colour, or an unusual viewpoint that conflates un-connected subjects. This dissonance is a liberation from the descriptive, allowing for a more abstract interpretation. Formal abstraction takes precedence over subject matter.
