The Builder Priest
The Buildings of Monsignor John Hawes in Western Australia
by Steve Marshall
The John Hawes story is a rich and colourful strand in the history and heritage of Western Australia. Born in England, he was a qualified architect before entering the priesthood, first as an Anglican, then later as a Catholic. He lived in the midwest region of Western Australia from 1915 to 1939, working tirelessly as both priest and architect. He left many buildings in the city of Geraldton and in many surrounding towns.
There are other books about John Hawes, including two biographies and a detailed study of his architecture. This book is a simple photographic appreciation of his remarkable legacy.
