Dilapitated shop facades in Glasgow and surrounds,interpretation is open,but I would like to share my particular take on the image content that resonates for me.I like to view these shop frontages as assemblages or artist studios with the artists work as the façade,the artist could be unknown,or international ,when finding a patch sometimes its style reminded me of particular artists,Beuys,Judd,Rauschenberg,others may appear as discovery of a practice,this gave me the reason to edit my name and book title for the cover as a fictional frontage,claimed by capture.Many of these stores were empty,abandoned or used for storage but also could be typically hired as artist studio.I enjoyed the assemblages as imaginery artists displays as well as my own,it is often the case to discover my own ideas end up looking like imitations,seeking originality is negated.Originality is impossible and style is commodity,therefore I embrace the same and appropriate style as practice.Anyone could take a unique photo of a given man made subject,a building for example, but it is always a collaborative dialogue between the maker and the capturer,is a photo not original if the subject is someone elses creation?
I like to view the project as investigation into multiple style in simple repeated format,a door,a sign ,a [shuttered]window.The shuttering heightens the almost flat surface,which is layered with time and entropy.The historic and infrastructural associations of the frontages are intrinsic and valid,though the view is welcomed they weren't my particular focus of intrique.Variation of repitition,layered styling,time related colouring,expansion of limitation,matters such as these were my main impetus.
