South Africa is a country of extremes where the disparity between rich and poor has been increasing since majority rule was achieved. Yet I see South Africa as a county of hope and promise where the full potential is yet to be reached.

These photographs depict a personal view of many different areas of South Africa during the 2000s, when I have been captivated by the comparison between majestic landscapes and the everyday evidence of people’s lives – their washing hanging on lines, fences, bushes and trees.

As the poet Marilyn Walker says ‘…there are no secrets you could keep when clothes were hung to dry’. So these photographs give us a small glimpse into everyday life hanging out in glorious scenery.
