About the Book
Freshwater Swamps of South Florida provides a visual tour that highlights the beauty of these under appreciated places. Many plant and animal species depend upon the unique features swamps offer to live, feed, and raise their young. The images within this book were all captured on public access trails and boardwalks in easily accessible publicly owned swamps. Every reader can be sure that if they take the time to stroll along on their own swamp adventure they will see many of the creatures and plants pictured in this book, and probably more! Swamps are relaxing and educational places that take us away from our busy lives and give us a chance to get in touch with nature. So, please enjoy the book and then go out and see what treasures you find in the Swamp!
Avia Huisman is currently a PhD Candidate in Comparative Studies at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. She moved to Florida with her parents when she was five years old and has been exploring its wild places ever since. As a result, she is passionate about helping to preserve Florida's natural ecosystems and restore much of Florida's degraded swamps and wetlands to their natural state. Understanding that public support is key in such efforts, Avia uses her artist's eye to photograph Florida's remaining wild places. She hopes that by sharing Florida's natural beauty with the public that she may inspire those who see her photographs to learn more about Florida's Native Ecosystems and, ultimately, earn their support in protecting them.
