Kay O'Hanlon Young grew up in the Nebraska small town of Blair. The town's population of 6,800 never seems to go up or down. Much of life stays pretty predictable. Football is king, Jell-O could arguably be a part of the food pyramid and the volunteer fire department whistle still blows at 6:00 pm sharp. In this cookbook she shares the recipes of her childhood.
Her mother's dishes resembled many of the other kitchens in town and in the state. "Secret" recipes really did not exist but were traded and passed along through the generations. These foods are hearty, sweet, fried and gravied. Today, modern cooks choose a lighter, healthier fare for their stovetops. This book reminds us of what food used to taste like. It pays homage to a time when milk was delivered right to your refrigerator and things were uncomplicated. This is a memoir and a family cookbook written for her Mother. It is filled with the dishes she grew up with. She hope it brings a smile to your face.
