About the Book
My ongoing project is one in which I have photographed the somewhat obscure and forgotten part of the landscape and its inhabitants outside of New York City. Just 90 miles separates some of the most wealthy towns in the country from a region that time and progress has seemed to have stopped. When the large hotels and resorts were thriving, tens of thousands of people flooded to the Catskill Region of New York; by the early 1990’s the vacationers were gone and the resorts and hotels were abandoned.
This area is a virtual time capsule of what once was, mid century modern and atomic age architecture contrasts with the stark landscape of 19th century hamlets within towns that are only partially inhabited. The people who I have met and photographed are interesting for their ability to adapt and survive and put forth hope for a brighter future for themselves and their home.
The social demographics of this area is as diverse as most cities; however, the economic challenges are different. Meeting, interviewing, and photographing the people and documenting the changing landscape of what once was and what now is, is my primary goal. To portray the people and their environment in a straight forward and honest way, revealing a unique region and a changing way of life.
