About the Book
In December 2010, designer Dominique Falla made a foolish and public declaration that she would devote herself for a whole year to one typeface and one typeface only—Helvetica. It would appear that the year went remarkably well for Dominique, and she felt it was only appropriate to say ‘goodbye’ to Helvetica properly.
This book documents the typographic installation Goodbye Helvetica, which took place in early 2012, in the Surfer’s Paradise Transit Centre on Australia’s Gold Coast.
The project was installed over the course of five weeks in a curated research space facilitated by Griffith University, and forms part of Falla’s ongoing doctoral research into Tactile Typography. The book showcases all ten works, the construction behind each one and a little about the motivation behind each piece and also gives us an insight into the linkage between a relationship break-up with a person and the parallels she draws with the break-up with the typeface.
