About the Book
Oaxaca (Wah-ha-kah) separated from the rest of Mexico by the rugged and spectacular mountains has pursued its own destiny. The region located at the meeting point of three central valleys, is the home of large indigenous communities who have thrived to carry forward their traditions of fine handicrafts, arts, food, dress and unique lifestyle. The pre-Hispanic towns set a the dramatic backcountry and enjoys plenty of rain and sunshine.
Here religious practices, dance and music have always been essential for fulfillment of life. Guelaguetza, an annual feast of celebration and regional culture, is an event which the local communities look forward to display their finest costumed dances. The youth and children taking the lead roles, the ancient rites in honor of maize and wind gods are certain to continue in full dignity and sincerity.
