Negara, an agricultural town in the scenic Jembrana district of Bali, Indonesia holds its annual event, Mekepung. Water buffaloes drag a small chariot along a rectangular makeshift racetrack around rice fields. The prize goes not to the fastest, but to the most elegant and sporting rider, kneeling or standing on the chariot. While the elders provide valuable guidance to the young participants, the children try their best to help in the preparations. The tradition is in continuation over 150 years with pride and valor, by the villagers around the valley.
This book is dedicated to the community of Negara, who have been holding their flag high by passing over the legacy of such a unique sporting event.
