Gérard the photographer is also “un comédien et metteur en scéne” – an actor and director. I too have worked in those areas of the Arts, and am sure these experiences are among the seeds of his photographic excellence.
When one is in the process of auditioning actors for roles in a play or film, he spends far more time looking “into” them than “at” them. The pictures that must live and breathe and feel and make all of that felt by viewers demand the “beauty” that is deeper than the skin. In his photography, Gérard produces, not “still life” pictures, because Life is there; he gives us “freeze frames”, one frame out of a full moving, feeling, thinking, ‘living’ scene. And, he does this with real men, average men.
With his poignant ability to see to the heart of the “average” man, Gérard exposes heart and soul, raising to majestic pedestals men you otherwise pass on the street without noticing. Viewers, be glad that Gérard notices and points us to seeing the beauty of the usual and familiar. Cherish these “Average Men”!
Gérard Goutel was born in 1955 in Paris, and is currently living near Vendôme, a picturesque city near the Loire River. He is a Theatre Director and Actor. Always interested in photography, a few years ago he began his photo work with human models and now specialises in male portraits and nudes. Most of the models he chooses are average men because he believes and demonstrates that everybody is photogenic and can be beautiful. The secret of a photograph is in the eye of the photographer.
