About the Book
356 pages. 10 x 8 inches (25 x 20cms)
Every one of the 337 coloured plates from one of the most important, illustrated, ornithological books ever published. Each plate is shown in its original condition and size. Complete original survivors of Lewin's beautiful work sell for upwards of £5,000 ($9,500) simply because of the quality and value of the plates. Here they all are for a fraction of that amount and properly indexed and notated into the bargain.
I sell this book in the (forlorn?) hope that it will depress the market for original prints and so deter uncaring print dealers from ripping up the very few remaining, intact copies.
Just today (July 1st 2013) I find another dealer offering original prints ripped from an original volume; ".. having only recently been excised from a defective set of this renowned work . ." Ripping it up of course is the absolutely the very best way to preserve such a precious book, no matter what condition it is in - which couldn't have been that bad or the prints would have been unsaleable.
