Descr. "Come to the Zoo -- Photos and Haiku" invites young readers to visit a variety of fascinating animals that share the earth with us. Each creature is pictured in a striking color photograph and described by a three-line poem called a "haiku." Young children can learn to recognize 26 best-loved animals and birds. Older children and adults can enjoy the vivid, full-page color images and text. Families may want to try writing their own animal haiku verse together, or have an important discussion about the importance of saving our planet's wild creatures. This book in e-book format would be perfect to take on long flights or road trips with young children.

Learning activities for three different age groups (3-5; 6-7; 8-10) may be downloaded FREE of CHARGE at the book's website: The lesson plans were written specifically for Come to the Zoo by exemplary elementary school teacher Sharon Noteboom, teacher emeritus, San Francisco Public Schools, with contributions by author Anna Dabney, former English teacher.

About the Author

Anna Dabney
CritterLvr Oakland, CA

I began my working life as an English teacher. For six years, I taught students in U.S. public schools and I spent three years overseas -- in Turkey, Germany and France -- as a teacher of U.S. dependents. After both our children had entered school, I made a career change, working as a professional writer/photographer/editor and manager in corporate communications for hospitals and health systems. In 1993, I started my own writing consultant business, AD Communications.

After my first grandchild was born, I began writing "critter poems." I have completed six collections which I illustrated primarily with my own photos. Three "books" contain longer, rhyming poems, and three feature animal haiku. Come to the Zoo -- Photos & Haiku, is my first officially published book.

“Anna's delightful book is educational, entertaining, and creative. My five-year-old grandson is captivated by the images. After reading, he likes to make an animal parade with his toys. The gorgeous photos alone are worth the price!”

-- Jean Gregory, retired preschool and elementary school teacher, writer and performing “storyteller”

“Anna Dabney’s witty poems are paired with remarkable photographs in Come to the Zoo. Her three-line haiku skillfully capture the essence of each creature. Entertaining and informative …a treat for all ages.”

“Anna’s book is a must-have for children’s bookshelves. Come to the Zoo is a stunningly beautiful book that should stimulate some long overdue conversations with our children about saving our earth and the wild creatures that inhabit it. I’m honored to have two of my photographs published in this fine work of art.”

-- Debbie Andrews, poet and photographer

“Come to the Zoo is a delightful, very colorful, very absorbing palette of haiku composed by the author, Anna Dabney, to honor the proudest of the wild animal realm, with poignant photography, most of which she took. A gem!”
