China is a very confusing place. It is difficult to see where it is going. Oddly, it is confusing not only to the outside world, but to the Chinese as well. They are like a huge swarm of educated, hard working, and put-upon people who are going to get out of their mess somehow, but don't know exactly how. The whole world is watching, but it is hard to really see it clearly. In June 2010, we tried to see it and understand it. This book is about that trip and some of our observations about the ancient and modern cultures of this fascinating country.
