the digital city series is a digital photography project that was conceived and began by the San Francisco born/Amsterdam based artist, Bernard Bolter, in the fall of 2007.
The compositions of the digital city series are the results of research and investigation into the landscape and inspiration of each particular city. Moving about by skateboard, most of the time, photographs and sketches are made for possible directions in the compositions. Whenever possible, more photographs are taken with these compositional directions in mind. The cities are then mocked-up and finished on the computer.
“early on, I realized that bringing a preconceived idea to an unknown city, wasn’t working out, and it became more relevant to let the city tell its own story, through my experience” - artist
For each city, a short text of ideas, thoughts or observations, have been written. These texts are to be interpreted however, directly or indirectly, to the work, as one feels fit.
