Re-Presenting Nappy: A Black Hair Story is a contemporary black hair narrative that presents an innovative approach to the subject of black hair/style politics in an Artist Book format. The style and structure of the book combines storytelling, critical engagement and photography to challenge notions to do with the objectification of black hair in relation to African American culture.

Mawusi Amoaku is a Visual Artist/Designer, whose art practice explores themes of identity, representation and speech, located within the discourse of black women’s hairstyling practices. Working in the mediums of photography, storytelling and sculpture, she explores the complex nature of personal identity using hair as a metaphor for ‘Self’.

Her sculptural work and art practice aims to reposition the tradition of black hairstyling within a fine art context, recognizing the skill and enterprise engaged in black hairstyling.
