Mildred Alpern grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, attended Girls' Latin School, and then Boston University where she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in government. She received a Masters Degree from Columbia University Teachers College in history and the social sciences. A former history teacher and writer of educational guides and articles, she now defines herself as a photographer.
