This book was inspired by my exploration and investigation into the book design, ideas and creative processes of Irma Boom. It was created as part of my studies toward a Master of Design.
This book has been designed within the confines of print on demand publishing, which has revolutionised the industry. While print on demand technologies offer quality, convenience, customisation and affordability, there are limitations. These restrictions force designers to conform, or innovate.
Through a unique page border, custom designed on each of the four hundred and forty pages, I have stretched the limitations of print on demand publishing to accommodate my design, to enable images to be printed on the page edges of the book.
This book also invites the owner to finish the production process, by taking a pair of scissors, or a blade, to the first one hundred pages, as well as the cover. Guidelines are provided to indicate where each page needs to be cut. The book cover design is only revealed once all required slices have been made.
