"The Steel" is the local name for the Bethlehem Steel plant in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Bethlehem Steel, once the second largest steel company in the United States, ceased to exist in 2003. In 2005 photographer Peter Engeldrum was allowed to photograph the remnants of this once thriving plant.

This is a picture story of reclamation and the ghostly residue of the past.
