“Bear with me,” by Campbell Hutchinson ©2013, a children’s books of paintings, limericks
My sixth book has a new feature: photographs of animals are included in addition to the limericks and pictures of my paintings. The photographers are family. I took the pictures of the Colorado bears. My grand niece, Kathryn Davis, took the photos of the African wildlife.
A former lawyer now pursuing a career in fine art, I am an expressionist painter trying to capture the spirit of my subject, be it man, animal or place. In 2008 I wrote, illustrated and published my first book, “wild things,” consisting of my animal paintings and limericks I wrote about each painting. My five succeeding books were in the same vein, featuring my animals and limericks. My recent (2014) book, "This is Our Land," is markedly different in that the emphasis is on the land and wilderness, and all my paintings included in the book are landscapes. Accompanying each painting is a quote from a noted writer, poet, naturalist or environmentalist about the value of our wilderness and its preservation for generations to come. Edward Abbey wrote “Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.” That is the message of “This Land is Our Land.”
