Through My Father's Eyes
by Debra Abernathy Phelps
Larry Abernathy was a professional newspaper photographer in the 1960's. His ability to capture the emotions of his subjects was amazing to me and I wanted to share his photos and their stories.
Debra, Your father was my inspiration to become a news photographer in the 60's while he was at the Delaware State News. I was amazed to see the pictures he shot at accidents and fires at all hours of the night. He wasn't at the State News when I was hired in 1965 but I heard many stories about him. I'm very sorry I never had the chance to meet him during the 20 years I spent at the State News and the 26 years with the Wilmington News Journal. He was a legend.

Should you see this, try checking with your state historical society. Here in OK, our Oklahoma Historical Society archives all the newspapers, as does our local county genealogy society, through microfiche/film and digital scanning. Good luck!
