The steam worked narrow gauge (2’00”) railways of South Africa attracted the attention of enthusiasts worldwide, as witness the continued workings by their locomotives within South Africa and in several overseas countries. This is a superb book, 76 pages landscape. Coverage is of the South African Railways owned line in Natal between Umzinto – Ixopo – Donnybrook, including the Madonela branch line. The majority of the coverage is of S.A.R. days (until the line closed, section by section, in the mid 1980s). This was the landscape so enhanced by the NGG16 Garratts , seen working the three principal sections Umzinto - Highflats, Highflats- Ixopo, and Ixopo – Donnybrook (and a glimpse of the Madonela branch) . Of interest are the photographs taken on the dual gauge (2’ 00” / 3’6” ) section of the route, at the Donnybrook end. The remaining 30% of the book is devoted to authentic mixed train working by an NGG11 Garratt on the resurrected 2/3rds section of the Ixopo – Madonela line.
The South African 2’00” gauge locomotives are unlike any others in the World. Large and powerful, they are truly impressive. This is real steam action. Besides the stunning nostalgic photographs, the book abounds with informative, anecdotal captions - often of an extended nature. an introduction, a route schematic and summarised technical information. The photographs, of course, are the essence of this book. Taken from the collection of South Africa's most prolific steam photographer, well known for his 23 books to date, including the highly acclaimed best sellers "The Sunset of Steam" and "The Shimmer of Steel". Please note that this book is partially extracted from the omnibus work** “Steam on SARs narrow gauge lines” but includes an exclusive extra 16 pages ,[** please see the separate entry in the bookstore]. “UMZINTO – IXOPO - DONNYBROOK narrow gauge steam” is a complete work in its own right, focusing on this particular, and much loved, narrow gauge system. It includes an additional
