About the Book
In May 2008, we traveled with a group from Florida Southern College to China. Flying over the North Pole, we arrived in Beijing ready for culture shock and a look at the city that would be hosting the summer Olympics. Beyond our expectations, we found a burgeoning capitalist society bursting out from behind the restraints of communist rule - ordered chaos: controlled overgrowth. These contradictions prevailed the more we learned about their customs.
The people were welcoming and eager to share their pride of country, but still held their true selves and opinions in reserve. Their traditions are rooted firmly in ancient superstitions which oddly coexist with their desire to participate in global modernism. The Chinese people are diverse and are more similar to Americans than we expected.
Following the ancient Silk Road, we traversed modern cities built right up against and on top of the ancient; we explored deserts, oasises, caves, temples, nomadic communities, Muslim bazaars; we cruised the Yangtze. We stayed in all three of the world's most populated cities. We breathed the polluted air of a society still burning coal to cook their food. We ate dried baby eels.
We were fascinated, amused, affected.
In this book of Images, you will find our view of China. The places we traveled to: Beijing, Urumqi, Xinjiang, Turpan, Jiaohe, Dunhuang, Jiayuguan, Xi'an, Chongqing, Yangtze River, Ghost City, Shennongxi Stream, Wuhan, Suzhou, Shanghai - were beautiful and wondrous. We hope enjoy these moments in time.
