Sustainable Street lighting Project
To create a range of street lighting in a bespoke style. The range is to be made from sustainable materials and to be powered by sustainable methods
A Survey published on 13th November has revealed that two-thirds of councils are either switching off or dimming street lights to save money. 122 councils took part in the survey, 35 councils had turned lights off, 72 were dimming lights and 26 were doing both. This could have consequences of safety but also does not take into consideration the people that do not work in a 9-5 job and rely on street lights to get to and from their place of work.
Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: “Councils should do a very careful risk assessment and be confident that switching off street lights will not lead to an increase in accidents or personal safety issues.” (Lighting 2013)
Sefton council have been trialling switching off street lights in my local area of Southport because of this I want to investigate a sustainable cost effective way of designing, manufacturing and using street lights.
