SMALL SPACE by Dirk Jan Jager is a selection of analogue photographs made by the artist throughout the 1990s, a period that ended with the advent of the affordable digital camera. The photographs were made by the artist himself, with no other person present, as an experiment to capture certain visual ideas. This book presents these photographs as art works in their own right, in their celebration of transitoriness of various kinds. Prominent in the photographs is the entry of the physical body into the frame and an eloquent relationship between the body and its spatial surroundings. In retrospect, the photographs reflect a gradual transition in the artist's work from painting to performance art.
