This book is a collection of memories of young Zouky…her father was a famous physicist, in whom the Germans had an unhealthy interest. They had “offered” him employment in Germany even before they invaded France, but Zouky’s very patriotic French father had adamantly refused. Despite strong objections from his very devout family, he married an orphaned ballerina and our little Zouky was born. When the war began in earnest, they both knew that remaining in France would be perilous, and so they planned their escape. But, how to leave undiscovered while travelling with a young six year old child? With no grandparents or family to take care of her, they decided to follow the advice of a trusted friend and leave Zouky in the Cours Sevigne in Vence, where she spent the years during the war…..and this is her story…
Sylvaine Rouy Neves emigrated from France to complete her education, settled in New York City where she married, raised three children and worked in her husband's family's restaurant, the Blue Mill Tavern for decades. During that time, she enrolled in writing classes at The New School, and had articles published in The New York Times and other publications.
