Captivity is the first of Christian's photographic books and despite its disturbing appearence there is a deeper meaning behind its front cover.
Captivity is all about trying to make people realise how differently we react to seeing humans in captivity instead of animals. People seem more willing to protest against human cruelty than animal cruelty. By presenting his models in such a form he creates a darkened analogy that reflects how animals are kept in captivity.
After all would you show more empathy for a human in Captivity or an animal?
