About the Book
The Children of Lir illustrates the story of the Corrib gas conflict, a pipeline traversing the small village of Rossport County Mayo, Ireland. This dissertation illustrates a modern day David and Goliath struggle between the rural farmers and anglers of Erris, who oppose the Corrib gas pipeline, and the project’s supporting multinational corporations. Encompassed within the story of Corrib are many of the relevant topics of twenty-first century politics: affiliations amongst governments and transnational corporations, the strain between environmental protection and the global requirement for fossil fuels, the balance between democracy and development, as well as the importance of a local and indigenous identity in a globalized economy.
