Getting It Right- the Paintings of Daniel John Gadd
This is an interesting moment in the current history of painting. What was for a time forbidden is now once again viable to another generation of young artists. The rediscovered value of both painterly technique and personal narrative have fused to create an art that seeks, in a series of epiphanial moments, paintings that champion those illusive qualities that are the document of a life lived.
This is evident in Daniel John Gadd's practice, an artist looking to create a presence in his work thru the alchemy of paint. There is a range of subjects from the personal to the near mythic where each painting is a portal of light coming out to greet the viewer. For Daniel it is paint that is the vehicle in a process of revelatory studio sessions, that speaks across stylistic boundaries, revels in its own making and where technical experimentation is at the service of an unfolding vision.
Painting is a language and the function of language is to allow us to speak. The question then is what is there to say, what needs to be said? There is in Daniel's work a deep tenderness and sense of wonder and yet a fierce necessity to make this thing of value. In his conversation with Art History and his peers, he is unafraid to render himself vulnerable in seeking this artist's reward, the joy of making something worthy, of getting it right and offering it to us. Daniel shares his art making with a growing and deepening community of artists of common concern; the making of things with paint by any means necessary and in seeking to render as Cezanne said, “ the flow of the world in a an inch of matter.”
